At Least It Looked Pretty

Chargers Raiders FootballIgnore the performances for a second and just sit back and admire the beautiful ensembles the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders sported this past Monday night.

APTOPIX Chargers Raiders FootballIt’s really difficult to write about this game because the result posed more questions than answers about each team. The one thing on which we can all agree, these uniforms need to make another appearance this season.

We got to see a another pair of throwbacks on Monday night in the first game of the doubleheader.  Again quality uniforms, terrible outcome.

With other teams still waiting to sport their AFL throwbacks, we have much to look forward to this season. As well as some more shitty performances on the field…but at least they’ll look sharp.

So Cool He Had Ice In His Veins

Posted in Sports, Throwback Thursdays with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 7, 2009 by Enrique Enfuego

gervinA little something is missing from Round 2 of the NBA Western Conference playoffs. I don’t miss it that much to be honest, but Spurs-Lakers was just something we have all come to expect in the month of May.

In memory of the franchise from San Antonio, originally the Dallas Chaparrals, Throwback Thursdays is featuring the best Spur to ever hit the hardwood, 9-time NBA All-Star George “Iceman” Gervin.

One cool cat he was. It definitely helps to be sporting silver and black too. You cannot go wrong with that color scheme.

Did you know Iceman played a season in Chicago with the Bulls? So odd.

Gervin has impacted many other NBA players, such as Gary Payton, who idolized Iceman as a kid. Word on the street is when The Glove was asked to explain what he liked so much about Gervin, Payton responded, “he’s just so saucy.”

For more of Payton’s eloquence you can tune in to NBA TV for some of the more entertaining NBA commentary around. For more coverage of throwback uniforms from the various sports leagues, you can navigate your browser to Rocksoft every Thursday.

The Original Superman

On Tuesday night Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard lost his cool and threw an elbow, earning him a one game suspension. He will be sorely missed when his teammates try to finish off the Sixers tonight in Philly. This situation got me thinking a few things…

Shaq looked good in a pinstriped Magic uni, but especially in black.
Jerseys nowadays are just too form-fitted.
Why hasn’t more been made of Dwight Howard’s hijacking of the Superman nickname?
Dude can fly, but Shaq was untouchable in his prime.
At least when Shaq lost his cool, he had enough sense to whiff…hard.

Let’s talk real throwbacks for a moment…

POD007877012Whereas the Orlando Magic have only been around for 20 years, their playoff opponents, the Philadelphia 76ers, are the oldest franchise in the NBA. This picture just does it for me. Wilt and Bill, two of the all time greats going at it, clean unis, color photo, long socks and short shorts. The NBA doesn’t get much better than this.

Once again we have a case of a relocated franchise. Even the Sixers are not originally from the city in which they currently reside.

"We talking about practice."

You guessed it. The Syracuse Nationals were the original team name and location for the Sixers.

Iverson held it down in Philly for good while, sporting all types of looks, but this is a favorite…

nba_g_jordan_iverson_580Jordan is stealing show in the battle of 90s uniforms here. I gotta say, there is something about pinstripes on the dark uniforms, more teams need to try it.

That should do it for Round 1. Throwback Thursdays will return next week for some Round 2 action.

VS.

clyde-drexler

The Blazers and Rockets square off in Game 3 of their first round series on Friday night.

Both teams were lucky enough to have Clyde “The Glide” Drexler on their rosters at some point.

You already know my appreciation for a certain style Rockets uniform, but the Blazers had their share of dope unis too.

Just remember, it’s not always pretty.

Here’s a quick refresher as to why they called Clyde “The Glide”…

Card Shop VIII: ThrowSapp Thursday

sappcanesThe dude was pretty fit back in those days. He actually saw some action at punter in high school. Back then he also delivered Johnny Damon his first concussion, but not his last.

Sapp had an uncanny ability to make any uniform look fresh…

sappbucsEven if the uni was already fresh…

20061224-raidersUnfortunately he was not able to maintain that slim figure throughout his pro career. He probably took too many pointers from the diet of Ted Washington. You know, snacking on QBs and what not.

We still love you Warren.

A Dream When Jerseys Were Clean

lg_olajuwon_allSome NBA uniforms have gotten straight hideous. The Houston Rockets have not avoided this trend.

Simplicity is key.

Your Grandmother’s Free Throw

Posted in Sports, Throwback Thursdays with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 12, 2009 by Enrique Enfuego

NBA great and University of Miami alumnus Rick Barry actually shot free throws like your grandma.

Really weird stuff.

Not so weird are “The City” jerseys that the San Francisco Warriors used to sport back in the 60s.

The Golden Gate Bridge is such an iconic fixture of the Bay Area, it’s only fitting that it made its way on to one of the sports team’s jerseys.

The back of jersey had the numbers inside an old trolley car. So tight.

The now Golden State Warriors will occasionally sport these dope unis.

Jerseys in general need to incorporate more skylines and man made structures. It always seems to increase the dopeness of the uniform.
